North Carolina, like most states, operates under a three-tier distribution model for beer and wine (hard liquor is sold through the State’s control system of local ABC stores).
Under this model, suppliers (breweries, wineries and importers) operate in the manufacturing tier, distributors operate in the middle tier, and grocery stores, convenience stores, bars and restaurants operate in the retail tier.
One of the primary purposes of the three-tier system is to establish local control by leveling the playing field among industry members, preventing any one tier from becoming too powerful to the exclusion of others.
The result is a fair, transparent and balanced marketplace that allows enormous product selection and promotes consumer safety.
